Structured Wiring refers to a planned and centralized system that allows for easy installation of computer networks and Audio/Video components. With proper planning, a structured wiring system can prepare your home for today and the future.
2x2 SYSTEM
A good structured wiring standard is to have a 4 port, 2x2(2RG6,2cat5e) outlet installed in each room of your home or office. All outlets begin at a central panel located in a utility room and branches out from there. This layout is known as a star topology. All drops should easily be accessible at the panel and have adequate room for networking and A/V components. A 2x2 system will cover most of your networking and TV sharing scenarios.
NETWORK PANEL
There are several options when it comes to installing a network panel. If the panel wil be located in a finished living space you will want to go with the clean look of a flush mount box with a lid. If the panel is going into an unfinished utility room you can simply use a sheet of plywood(24"x 36") mounted to a wall with the components mounted to the plywood. If excessive dust or curious kids are a factor, always use a panel with a cover. The network panel will typically contain a modem/router, patch panel, phone module, and video splitter.
USES AND BENEFITS
Data Network- Install a computer network with relative ease. The modem and/or router can be installed at the panel and distribute data throughout home. You can simply plug your laptop or computer into any of the data outlets installed in your home. A wireless router can also be installed in a convenient location for all of your wireless enabled mobile devices.
TV System- This aint your Grandma's old antenna system. With the amount of information that is being transferred today, particularly HD signals and high speed internet, you need to have quality RG6 cables installed in your home. Smart TVs require a data feed as well as an RG6 coax cable.
Phone Lines- Many people are getting rid of their land lines but some homeowners still like the reliabilty and convenience of their home phone. Telecommuters are often required to have a land line for work. Simply plug a phone into any room you choose and it's ready to go.
Audio/Video- With proper wiring, and the right equipment, you can keep all of your A/V components in a central location. This will allow you to share the same A/V sources throughout the house. For example, you can have a BlueRay player transmitting to one or more of your TVs in different locations.
